On a sunny June afternoon in Witney and what would have been a normal quiet day for the sleepy market town, a 1966 London Routemaster Double Decker bus pulled up outside the now legendary music club Fat Lils and along with it so did 30 or 40 young rockers from The Witchwood School of Rock with their guitars in hand. They were there to take part in a special day to celebrate the life and music of Marc Bolan & T.Rex.
The purpose of the whole day was to celebrate the collaboration between Born to Boogie Productions and The Witchwood School of Rock. The two aims of this partnership are firstly to launch a rock school syllabus which incorporates the life and music of Marc Bolan within it. The secondary aim is also in time to launch a Bolan Rock Bus which will travel around the country to festivals and concerts spreading the music and legacy of Bolan.
The whole event was a great success and enjoyed greatly by all in attendance. The children were joined on stage by members of the only officially recognised T.Rex tribute band T.Rextasy to jam along to Bolan covers chosen by the pupils and rehearsed all week at a special Marc Bolan holiday workshop. Famous numbers such as 20 Century Boy, I Love To Boogie, Buick Mackane, Children Of The Revolution, Get It On & Cosmic Dancer were blasted out at Fat Lil’s for the large crowd who were not disappointed!
9 year old Jasper Nixey who along with his brother Samuel (13) performed their own version of Children of the Revolution had this to say about the day “My brother & I only joined rock school about three weeks ago and we are so excited that we were given the opportunity to play a cool song like this. Samuel and I had so much fun on stage. We have also learnt a bit about Marc Bolan and didn’t realise what a legend he is. It was such a fun day watching all the other bands play with the guys from T.Rextasy and the Rock Bus was very cool”.
The day also included a Q&A session where the kids grilled Danielz from T.Rextasy as well as Brian Dunham & Martin Barden from Born to Boogie Productions.
A great day was had by all and it marked the beginning of the affiliation between The Witchwood School of Rock and Born to Boogie Productions with a bang! The new rock school syllabus with the Marc Bolan as the case study will be available soon. The planned next stop for the Bolan Rock Bus will be at the new Marc Bolan musical 20 Century Boy which premieres in Ipswich in September. As well as being able to watch an amazing show you will be able to catch rock school bands performing after being delivered safely by the Bolan Rock Bus!
